Class exercise: Tutorial Week One
A brainstorming session about the magazine’s title ‘Sample’…
What does sample mean?
- A small part of anything or one of a number, intended to show the quality, style or nature of the whole specimen
- Statistics, a subset of a population: to study a sample of the whole population
Potential theme ideas for the magazine that tie in with the concept of the word sample
- Sample of the world. Could focus on particular artforms or aspects of cultures etc - overseas culture. Should be what the target audience age group is interested in though. Not necessarily depressing so should include optimism for example, festivals, trends and social impacts
- Samples of emotions (happy, sad, depressed, anxious, stressed, ecstatic, inspired, fear, anger, frustration, anticipation, hopeful, shocked, confusion, relaxed, insanity, trapped, claustrophobia, excited, loved, hated, passionate, remorse, jealously/envy, horror) However, most of these listed are actually feelings rather than emotions
- And to narrow it down further, we begin to concentrate on that concept of happiness
Happiness
- Happy can lead into delusion, as people can believe they’re happy when they are actually far from it. Taking uplifting drugs is a good example of this
- It is extremely subjective. What makes one person happy can have quite the opposite effect on someone else
My analysis of the class exercise
This brainstorming session was effective because we were able to discuss a few different ideas and elaborate on the ones we all agreed were interesting and appropriate for the magazine’s theme. It was a successful exercise because we came to a swift agreement that the magazine’s theme could revolve around the notion of samples of happiness, which leaves us more time to continue onto other aspects of the magazine such as topic choices and the look and style of the magazine.
