Class exercises: Tutorial Week 4

This week we had a fairly productive class because it mainly allowed for a good opportunity to get into our production teams and bounce some ideas off each other and to see where every one’s at.

Paul, Maria and I make up the typographer/designer roles. We had an extensive discussion on different aspects of the style guide and decided on some things we could experiment with individually and then come back as a team to evaluate. We were also able to talk with the Art Directors and it was decided to have prints of our potential final layouts by Week 8, so the typographers/designers can have 2 weeks to check them and make sure the style guide was used effectively. I will elaborate on our production team meeting in a post that is relevant to my management role.

We also received feedback on our articles from Dan. Suggestions were to use resources available to get some reference material on poker machines and gambling addiction to substantiate my article. Also, it might be interesting to focus my article on one machine in particular like Queen of the Nile due to its popularity and research why it is apparently the most popular machine. Discuss what the real odds are and what demographic is most drawn to them. I am currently working on my article at the moment and I’ve made some changes according to Dan’s suggestions. I will post it up when I’m done and I’ll send it away to the editors to gain more feedback.

Also, we all received information on a forum that had been set up. The link to the forum is http://samplebj114.bigforumpro.com/ and I think it will be a great advantage to us all. We can communicate during the week, seek advice and post important topics such as deadlines, timelines etc. It will result in a much smoother and speedier process than just having a tutorial once a week.

Also, one of our Art Director’s, Matt suggested workshops could be a good idea for us to work together and maybe help each other out as we are creating the content to coincide with our articles. For example, a student wanting to use photography but doesn’t necessarily have the skills, they can use a workshop with students with experience in photography and seek help and advice. I think it’s a really good idea and will help us all to learn and it’s also effective in getting our work done on a higher level of quality.
