Meeting with the Typographer/Designer team
In class this week (Week 4), we had our first team meeting for the typographer/designer team. Paul, Maria and I discussed various possibilities relevant to a potential style guide. Since the class is keen to also experiment with a style guide no definite decisions have been made until next tutorial. Nonetheless, we still threw some ideas around and fortunately, we are all on the same page with each other. Topics we discussed were in relation to:. grid systems. typographic choices. inclusion of a folio. tags such as the authorTypographic choices include typefaces and some we discussed were:. Futura Ultra Light. Avante Garde Ultra Light. Helvetica Neue. Univers. Frutiger. Eurostile. KabelWe then learnt from Dan that the typeface we eventually choose must be part of the Adobe Font Family because they are the ones that the university is licensed to use. Luckily, the typefaces we discussed are part of the Adobe Font Family. We decided that each of us would take 2 typefaces each, from our discussion, and research and experiment with them. The two that I am doing are Avante Garde Ultra Light and Futura Ultra Light. We also decided that we would all take on Kabel. We talked about setting up a template for the class to work with that we would send out to ensure everyone has a better chance of sticking to the style guide that way and knowing exactly what the style guide requires. We thought we would split this task up into 3 smaller tasks so we could have 1 thing to do each, being:. a word documentation explaining the the style guide and how it works. providing a font family package of the typeface we choose for everyone to install (both PC and MAC forms). an Indesign document that has the grid and paragraph styles set upWe haven’t designated who will do what yet.Paragraph styles we will set up in the Indesign template we comprise of body text, a standfirst, em-dash, pull quote, headings before the text (not the main heading that will accompany the image on the double page spread, this is still the heading of the article but it will be clearer and more legible than the decorative ones we have the freedom to experiment with) and the author. We had all experimented with different grid systems during the previous week but one that Paul used using 8 columns stood out to us because it allows for more freedom while still providing a structure. Luckily, the class also liked this idea so it is the basis of the grid system we are all experimenting with this week.
